Vitamin-D

Vitamin D is important for many of the body's functions. It plays a very important role for the bones.

It is believed that too low a vitamin D concentration can reduce fertility in both women and men. However, it is not shown with certainty.

Measurement of Vitamin D

We recommend measuring vitamin D in connection with fertility treatment. The concentration of vitamin D should be above 50 nmol / l. Presumably, the ideal concentration is 50-100 nmol / L.
At very high concentrations above 200 nmol / L, vitamin D can be dangerous for the body.

If vitamin D has been too low and you are started on vitamin D supplementation, it is usually not necessary to measure vitamin D again. If it is nevertheless measured again several months should pass between the measurements as changes occur very slowly, even when taking vitamin D supplementation.

What if vitamin D is too low?

If vitamin D is too low, the concentration can be brought up in several ways.

  • Sunlight. When the sun's rays hit the skin, vitamin D is formed. Vitamin D is also formed even though the skin is protected by sunscreen with protective factor. People with dark skin also form vitamin D in the skin, but more sunlight is needed because pigment in the skin acts as a filter.
  • Intake of diet with high vitamin D content. Especially "fatty" fish such as salmon and mackerel contain a lot of vitamin D.
  • Vitamin supplement with vitamin D (tablets).

Vitamin D tablets

Vitamin D tablets usually contain cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).

If the vitamin D is too low in the blood, you can, as a rule of thumb, take a daily supplement in micrograms (μg) of “50 minus the measured concentration”. For example, if vitamin D is measured at 20 nmol / L, a daily supplement of 50-20 = 30 micrograms (μg) of D3 would be appropriate.

As a rule of thumb, the following doses of D3 may be recommended for low vitamin D levels in the blood:

  • Measured vitamin D below 25 nmol / l: 30-40 µg vitamin D3 daily for 3 months, then new measurement.
  • Measured vitamin D between 25-50 nmol / l: 10-20 µg vitamin D3 daily for several months.
  • Vitamin D measured above 50 nmol / L: No treatment. It is the recommended concentration.

Under normal circumstances, high doses of vitamin D should not be taken. With prolonged intake of more than 50 μg of vitamin D daily, there is a risk of serious side effects.
